How To Check Coolant Overflow Tank

If you notice any signs of coolant on the outside of the recovery tank or on the radiator cap or on the engine, you should:

1. Check all hoses and clamps.

2. Check the radiator cap and waste water tank for damage.

3. If the recovery tank shows no signs of damage, pay special attention to the condition of the radiator cap, as even a brand-new cap can be the source of the problem.

4. Compare the pressure rating on the radiator pressure cap to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications to ensure it is correct for the vehicle.

5. Wait until the system is completely cooled and remove the cover from the radiator or expansion tank, check for damage to the sealing gaskets that prevent the cover from holding pressure, and check for damage to the vacuum valve.

6. Pressure test the lid using a suitable tester and adapter. The cap should hold pressure up to its rating, then release, allowing the pressure to escape.
